How to Make Hot Chocolate Trifle

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus all ingredients needed as per box instructions
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 7 Tablespoons hot chocolate mix dry powder
  • 3 large egg whites
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Freshly-whipped cream
  • Chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips
  • Miniature marshmallows

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the cake batter by following the instructions on the box. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth it out evenly.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool completely.
  4. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips, unsalted butter, and sweetened condensed milk. Stir until smooth and melted. Remove from heat and let cool.
  5. In a well-chilled bowl of a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Once done, transfer it to another bowl.
  6. Switch the mixer to a paddle attachment. Beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and hot chocolate mix together until light and creamy. Fold in half of the whipped cream gently, then fold in the rest carefully to keep it fluffy.
  7. In a large heatproof bowl over barely simmering water, combine the egg whites and granulated sugar. Stir constantly and heat until it reaches 160ºF, which takes about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat, add cream of tartar, and beat on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form, which will take about 6-8 minutes. Add vanilla extract towards the end.
  8. Cut the cooled cake into bite-sized cubes. Place half of the cake cubes in the bottom of a large trifle dish. Spread half of the hot chocolate filling over the cake layer and drizzle half of the fudge sauce on top. Spread marshmallow fluff over the fudge sauce and add the remaining cake cubes.
  9. Follow with the rest of the hot chocolate filling and drizzle the remaining fudge sauce on top. Pipe freshly whipped cream around the border, and garnish with chocolate sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, and miniature marshmallows.
  10. Refrigerate until ready to serve to allow the flavors to blend.
